The city will explore whether it can force landlords to test for radon in basement apartments after a study found dangerous levels of the cancer-causing gas in one in every seven Hamilton homes tested.
The survey of nearly 300 homes has already triggered “radon mitigation†requirements for new Hamilton homebuilders and a renewed public health campaign to convince existing homeowners to test for the odourless, colourless gas.
Coun. John-Paul Danko asked if council could legally enforce radon testing in lower-level apartments — as well as a “mitigation†requirements if gas levels are found to be unsafe.
