The city of Hamilton is looking at the possibility of modular homes, which are homes made in a factory, transported and rebuilt on site as a solution to Hamilton’s affordable housing crunch.
Coun. Chad Collins (Ward 5, Centennial) says It’s a concept that’s worked in Vancouver and Toronto recently incorporated modular homes into a new plan to ease homelessness during the pandemic.
“The benefits are many, you can build these units off site and transport to locations. They are much lower cost than the unit cost for bricks and mortar development. Modular housing also provides an opportunity for housing providers to stretch their dollars farther,” he said.
City council is yet to ratify the motion.
