In order to help the cities provide affordable housing, the Federal officials are finalizing the details of a program to help the cities in buying properties that were left vacant due to the pandemic.

To avoid people from falling into homelessness heading into the winter with temporary shelter measures set to expire, the government has considered the property acquisition program for months. This could lead to overcrowding in existing emergency shelters, or push more people onto the street which could make them more vulnerable to the coronavirus.

The Liberals were first approached with the idea months ago and have expressed a keen interest in conversations with mayors and housing providers over the summer.

While the government is seeking ideas for an economic recovery package, this proposal is one of many being floated to them. Federal departments have been asked for potential spending items, which could become part of an economic update or budget later this fall.
